In the digital world things change so fast that we often do not have time to rethink whether our business is adapted to the new times, especially in the more technological aspects. One of the most important is knowing whether our website is up to date with what users and search engines expect today, so we can take advantage of the opportunities the internet offers.
In this article we will see 5 signs your website needs a redesign that brings big benefits and a good return on investment in the form of sales or conversions.
1. Your website is not responsive
One of the keys to knowing whether our website is adapted to the times we live in is checking how it looks and works on mobiles and tablets. Today most traffic arrives from mobile and, in addition, Google indexes and ranks your website based on its mobile version. A website that is not designed for mobile loses customers and rankings. It is as easy as opening it on your phone and seeing whether it is really comfortable to use.
Let’s use an example to keep it simple.

As you can see, in the first image the website appears as if it were the desktop version and it is impossible to tap the links with a finger because they are too small. In the second we see less information at first and much easier clicking.
2. The content management system is out of date
There are other content management systems like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla… and there are also websites with no CMS, built directly in HTML. One of the most important aspects of our website is the content management system: if you want to know what WordPress is, I explain it in another article.
An outdated CMS, theme or plugins are an open door to security problems. If you want to know which CMS you have and which version, you can use tools like WhatCMS.

In the images you will see that, just by entering your website and clicking “detect”, it will tell you which content management system and which version you have.

3. The website is too slow
A slow website does not convert. More and more, users cannot stand slow loading and leave. And Google also measures speed and user experience (Core Web Vitals) as part of its assessment. A good balance between image optimization and text, together with good WPO optimization, will make it run much faster.
To check it you can use Google PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix or Pingdom Tools. If you want to go deeper, read my article How to measure your website speed.
4. Your business has changed focus and goals
Many businesses change their focus or their sales goals. In those cases we also need to change many aspects of the website. It will be a good moment to renew it and aim it at the new goals. That way we will not confuse potential new customers who visit our site and find old information. And while you are at it, check that your website conveys trust: a current design, visible contact details, customer reviews and clear calls to action.
5. SEO or search ranking
If your website does not appear in the first Google results, you should seriously consider working on your search ranking or SEO. Often it is because your website is not yet optimized to compete with other businesses that have already renewed theirs: clear structure, useful and up-to-date content, speed, mobile version and well-configured technical data. Today, your content also needs to be well structured so that search engines and AI assistants understand and cite it.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a website be redesigned?
There is no fixed rule, but as a guideline, a deep review every 3 to 5 years is advisable, and sooner if your business or customers change.
Does redesigning my website affect my SEO?
It can improve or worsen rankings. With good planning (keeping URLs, redirects and key content) the impact is positive.
Do I need to rebuild everything or is improving parts enough?
It depends. Sometimes updating the design, speed and content is enough, without starting from scratch.
