It offers free promotion we can take advantage of if we do it right. One of these days I will tell you about the best social networks for your type of company, but today I am focusing on explaining how to add Instagram to WordPress easily and quickly, and what has changed in recent years.

Why put Instagram on your WordPress website?

What kind of question is that? Instagram keeps sweeping across profiles of all ages and tastes. It is a purely visual network where we post our best products, services or photographs to reach people all over the world.

If your company (or you yourself) has a profile, you should already be linking it to your WordPress website. The advantages are clear:

Always fresh content: every time you post on Instagram, your website updates itself.

Social proof: real photos of customers and of your day-to-day build trust.

More followers: anyone who lands on your website can follow you with one click.

Better design: a good gallery brings to life a page that would otherwise be very static.

Before you start: what has changed with Instagram

This is important because many old tutorials (including the first version of this post) no longer work. Meta gradually closed access to its API, and at the end of 2024 the old Instagram Basic Display API, which many plugins used to connect personal accounts, stopped working.

What does this mean for you?

The best option is to have a professional account (Business or Creator). It is free and you switch from the app settings.

The connection is made through the official Instagram login, and the plugin asks you to authorize access.

Plugins that have not been updated to the current API stop showing the feed. If yours “went blank” overnight, this is probably why.

Plugins to add Instagram to WordPress

There are several plugins that let us do it easily, and some have a free version. This is my current selection, cleaned of the options that have become obsolete.

Smash Balloon Instagram Feed

It is still the reference and the one I recommend most. It has a free version, which covers the basics, and a paid version with more features. It keeps up with changes to the Instagram API, which is what matters most in this type of plugin.

What I like most:

Grid, carousel or masonry feed, fully customizable.

Pop-up (lightbox) when clicking a photo, with likes, comments and hashtags.

Support for Reels and videos, as well as photos and carousels.

It stores the images on your own server, so the feed loads fast and does not break if Instagram links expire.

Spotlight Social Media Feeds

Another very solid alternative, with a free version. Its strong point is simplicity: you connect the account, choose the design and paste the block or shortcode wherever you want. It also lets you show tagged posts and several feeds at once, ideal if you want to combine accounts.

Elementor and social media widgets

If your website is built with Elementor (like mine), many add-on packs include an Instagram feed widget. Check that it connects to the current API and does not add unnecessary weight to the page. If you already have one installed, you may not need another plugin.

Without a plugin: embedding single posts

For a one-off case (showing a specific post or a Reel), you do not need to install anything. WordPress lets you embed a post by pasting its link into the editor, or by using the embed code Instagram provides. It is the lightest option, although it does not update itself.

What happened to other plugins

If you read the first version of this post, you may remember Instagram Gallery, Instagram Journal, Grace or AccessPress Instagram Feed Pro. I have removed them from the list because, as things stand, I do not recommend them: they are either no longer maintained or depended on the API Instagram shut down. Before installing any plugin, always check the date of the last update and compatibility with your WordPress version.

How to choose the best plugin for your case

You have a local business or a shop: Smash Balloon, for its customization options and its own image storage.

You want something quick and free: the free version of Smash Balloon or Spotlight.

You only need to show one post: native WordPress embedding.

You are organizing an event with its own hashtag: check each plugin’s terms for what the current API allows, because hashtags are now more limited.

Tips so Instagram does not slow down your website

Lazy loading: feed images are only downloaded when the user scrolls to them.

Do not show 50 photos: 6 or 12 is usually enough and the page weighs less. This directly affects loading speed, an important SEO factor.

Use caching: a good caching plugin avoids querying the feed on every visit.

Place the feed somewhere that makes sense: footer, homepage or a “Follow us” section, not on every page by default.

Check privacy: some feeds load third-party resources. If you use a cookie banner, check that the plugin is GDPR compatible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add Instagram to WordPress for free?

Yes. Smash Balloon and Spotlight have a free version that is enough to show a basic feed. Advanced features are usually paid.

Do I need a professional account?

It is the most recommended option, and in practice almost essential since Instagram closed the API for personal accounts. Switching to a professional account is free and reversible.

My Instagram feed has stopped showing. What do I do?

The most common cause is that the connection to the account has expired. Go to the plugin settings, reconnect the account and clear the cache. If that does not work, check that the plugin is up to date.

Does it affect my website SEO?

Indirectly. A well-configured feed enriches the content and the user experience, but a poorly optimized one can worsen loading speed. That is why it matters to choose well and limit the number of images.

Conclusion

Adding Instagram to WordPress is still easy and quick, as long as you choose a plugin that keeps up with the Meta API. My advice: start with the free version of Smash Balloon or Spotlight, check how it looks and how it affects speed, and only then consider moving to a paid version.

And if you need help integrating it into your website, write to me and we will sort it out.
