Personally I do not like talking about the past: you always have to look to the future. That is why this is the updated version of an article I wrote a few years ago about web design trends. That one was about 2022 and, honestly, a lot has changed. Let’s look at what is in style in web design in 2026.

Before starting, remember the importance of web design within companies’ corporate communication. A good website makes your brand recognizable from the moment someone lands. And since design is not a decision to be taken lightly, this post is not only for designers, but for everyone who has a website or blog and does not want to be left behind.

So let’s begin with the web design trends, so that when you meet with your team you know what is in style and what suits your brand best.

1. Artificial intelligence in design (and in user experience)

If there is one big novelty since 2022, this is it. AI is now part of designers’ daily work: it generates ideas, images, text, layouts and prototypes in minutes. And on the web you can see it in things like chat assistants, content personalization or smart search. My advice: use it as an assistant, not as a replacement. A website with no personality, mass-produced with AI, shows from a mile away. If you want to know more, read my article on what ChatGPT is.

2. Animations and microinteractions

Animations are still protagonists, but now with more meaning: small movements on hover, smooth transitions, scroll effects or buttons that “respond”. “A picture is worth a thousand words” has become “an animated picture is worth a thousand static ones”. But careful not to overdo it. Animations should help understanding, not distract or slow down the website, and it is worth respecting people who prefer reduced motion.

3. Design with depth: shadows, layers and light 3D

What in 2022 was a 3D effect made of soft shadows and lights has evolved into a finer use of layers, transparencies, frosted glass (glassmorphism) and light 3D elements. It adds depth and gives a more modern feel, as long as the files weigh little.

4. Bento grids and modular design

Layouts in blocks of different sizes, like a bento box, have become very popular for showing lots of information in an orderly and attractive way. They combine well with asymmetric design: breaking the classic grid to add personality, but without going crazy.

5. Functional minimalism

The minimalism trend is still strong. Let’s apply the KonMari method to designing our website too: keep only the essentials. It is a good way to avoid getting carried away with a thousand and one plugins, effects and elements that, at worst, slow the website down. And remember: speed matters, check yours with my guide on how to measure loading speed.

6. Dark mode (and light) to choose from

Dark mode is no longer a fad, it is an expectation. Apps and systems offer it by default and more and more websites let you choose between light and dark mode. It adds elegance, helps highlight brand elements and is easier on the eyes in low light. Designed with good contrast, it also improves accessibility.

7. Large, expressive typography

Huge headlines, fonts with character and strongly marked type mixes are part of current design. Variable fonts let you play with different weights and widths while loading a single file. More in my guide to adding fonts to WordPress.

8. Colors: from vibrant color to natural palettes

Strong colors and gradients still work, but they coexist with softer, more natural palettes, earth tones and high-contrast combinations. What matters is not following fashion, but that your colors reflect your brand and are legible.

9. Authenticity: handwriting, illustration and real photos

In the middle of the AI era, the human gains value. Handwriting, freehand drawing, custom illustrations and real photographs of the team and the business convey closeness and trust. If you were thinking that what you do freehand does not turn out perfect, even better! Visitors appreciate those small unique flaws, because they bring humanity. Users want to meet the people behind the brands.

10. Accessibility and performance as part of design

They are no longer an extra: a website that is accessible (good contrast, readable text, keyboard navigation, alt text) and fast (optimized images, low weight) is the foundation of good design. Also review web usability and image optimization.

11. Ecommerce: more creative product presentation

If your website has an online store, the most important thing is to make products stand out. Alongside clean, classic photography, short videos, 360 views, usage contexts and creative or surreal approaches that catch attention and generate emotion so the user stays longer are in style.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to follow all the trends?

No. Pick the ones that fit your brand and your audience. A website that follows every fad ends up messy.

How often should a website design be updated?

A deep review every 3 to 5 years, with small improvements in between. See my 5 signs your website needs a redesign.

What matters more: design or content?

Both. A pretty design without good content does not convince, and good content badly presented does not get read.

As you have seen, web design is still full of novelties. But you do not need to go crazy and fill your website with every element I have mentioned. Your identity is unique: these trends are there to help you. Always try to follow the rules and recommendations I wrote back then so the website does not weigh too much or take long to load.

After all, your brand has to find its own place to stand out.
