As you well know, Google was, is and will be the most popular search engine of the internet era. And we do not only use it to look for a recipe or an address: we often use it to look for businesses, especially local ones.

That is why it is so important for every local or physical business to have its Google Business Profile and use it effectively.

What is Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business)?

An important clarification: what we used to know as Google My Business changed its name in 2021 and is now called Google Business Profile. It is the same free tool, although the way to manage it has changed: you no longer need to log into a separate dashboard, it is managed directly from Google Search and Google Maps by searching for your business name with your Google account.

The profile appears next to search results and in Google Maps, and usually shows the opening hours, location, contact information, photos, reviews and links to your website. You can also interact with your customers by replying to their reviews.

Having a well-kept profile is essential for local SEO: it is what makes your business appear when someone searches for “hair salon near me” or “plumber in your city”. It is a Google tool, just like Google Analytics, and combining the two is very powerful.

How to integrate your Google profile with WordPress

Step 1: Create or claim your profile

You need a Google account. Search for your business name on Google: if it already exists, you can claim it; if not, you can create it. Enter the name, category and address. If you have a shop or premises open to the public, show the address; if you only offer services at customers’ homes, you can hide it and define your service area. Add a phone number and your website URL.

Step 2: Verify your business

Google will ask you to verify that the business is yours. Depending on the case, you can do it by phone, email, video call or video or with a postcard with a code. The available methods depend on the type of business. This step can take a while.

Step 3: Complete the profile to 100%

A complete profile ranks better. Add opening hours (including holidays), real photos of your premises and your team, a description, services or products, and attributes. And ask your customers for reviews: I explain how to show them on your website in this article about Google reviews plugins.

Step 4: Connect the profile to your website

This is what really boosts your local SEO. These are the options I recommend:

Link your website from the profile (to the homepage or the services page) and make your website show the same contact details as the profile (name, address and phone, the famous NAP). Consistency is key.

Embed a Google Maps map on your contact page and add a “Get directions” button.

Show your reviews on the website with a Google reviews plugin.

Add structured data (LocalBusiness schema) with an SEO plugin like Rank Math, so Google better understands your business data.

Publish updates on your profile: offers, events or news add activity and relevance. You can do it by hand or with a plugin that automatically publishes your blog posts to the profile. Before installing one, check that it is up to date and still works with the current Google API, because the connection with profiles has changed several times. One example is WP Google My Business Auto Publish, which was very widely used, but verify its status before using it.

Tips to improve your local SEO

Reply to all reviews, including negative ones, politely.

Keep opening hours up to date, especially on holidays.

Upload new photos regularly.

Create a page on your website for each service and each location.

Check the profile statistics to see how many people call, ask for directions or visit your website.

Frequently asked questions

Are Google My Business and Google Business Profile the same thing?

Yes. Google My Business was renamed Google Business Profile in 2021. It is the same free tool, with management more integrated into Search and Maps.

Does it cost anything to create a profile?

No, creating and managing it is free.

Do I need a website to have a profile?

It is not mandatory, but having a website and linking it from the profile improves your visibility and customer trust.

Can I have a profile if I do not have premises?

Yes, if you offer services at customers’ homes you can hide the address and define a service area.

If you run tourist accommodation, the Google profile is only half of it: the other half is a website with direct bookings. Here I explain what a web design for vacation rentals looks like.

If you want more information or to contact me, go to my contact page.
